Acu means needle, puncture means piercing, it is through piercing of the needle in to the body surface the benefits are derived in one’s health.
History of the acupuncture System.
In primitive age, when a hunter was hit by an arrow on his foot by his co-hunter. chronic and long lasting catch in the back of the hunter was released instantaneously like magic. That was the starting point of the investigation of this science. Acupuncture is a 2000 to 3000 year old system. Well documented and time tested.
Why is it gaining popularity only in the recent years?
Because of language barriers, this knowledge remained with Chinese for centuries; they had protected and improvised the system till date. Journalist, James Weston, after the visit to china in 1971 during the cultural exchange program along with President Nixon of America, reported to the local journal about the miraculous cure of his post-operative pain of appendicitis by Acupuncture.
The modern viewpoint.
Acupuncture has become popular the world over during the past few decades. Acupuncture proved remarkably effective not only as an anesthetic agent for surgical operations, but in many diseases which are resistant to conventional forms of therapy. It is a simple, safe, effective and economical form of therapy.
Can it be combined or integrated with the other system of medicine?
It is observed that the time duration of treatment and consumption of drugs are reduced by 50% if the patient is under the treatment of Acupuncture concurrently.
Scientific aspect of the Acupuncture effects.
Analgesic (pain releasing), sedation (fall asleep), homeo static or regulatory effect (internal environment of the body towards the normal balance).Immune enhancing action(where body resistance to diseases is strengthened),that is due to an increase in the white corpuscles(Leucocytes),Antibodies, Gamma globulins and other substances,
Which is the resistance power of the body?
Where anti-biotic may have to be used the need for prolonged anti-biotic therapy can be considerably reduced by the concurrent use of acupuncture.
In case of resistance3 and hypersensitivity to antibiotics in chronic infections where the antibiotics failed or given rise to serious side effects.
In the peoples republic of china it has been shown that acupuncture alone can be effective in infections like appendicitis and tonsillitis.
Here certain specific points to be used to enhance the immunological effects.(At the institute of acupuncture kalubouila, certain malignant disorders have been treated successfully).
Acupuncture can bring about motor recovery in patients who have become paralyzed due to some cause or other Even late cases of motor paralysis respond well to the acupuncture therapy despite previous failures with other forms of therapy.
Are there any scientific theories to substantiate the acupuncture effect?
- Neurological theories,
- Humoral theory
- Bio-electric theory
- Embryological theory
- Defence mechanism and tissue regulation theory
- Psychogenic and ideological theory
- Placebo effect theory
- Catastrophic theory
- Traditional Chinese theory of acupuncture.
The overall view on the evolution of Chinese Traditional Acupuncture.
In pre-historic time, the Chinese discovered that there were certain points of the body which if massaged. Punctured, heated or burnt, relieve pain or had a beneficial effect on certain disorder.
Through passage of time many such points were discovered, it was found that by the stimulation of widely separated points it is possible to influence the functioning of a specific internal organ.
These points were systematically arranged on the basis of the pertaining organ. over which, it was perceived, they had an influence. The series of points which had an effect on a particular organ connected to form a channel. This is the basis of the theory of JING_LUO, heading in time ,to the finely evolved system. of casual inter relationships between points in a channel, and between the channels themselves, which was described in ancient classic, Huang Di Nei Jing.
How many channels are there?
There are twelve regular channels, called twelve paired channels. Six channels are Yin,Six are yang. They are referred as paired organs. they have exterior and interior relationship to each other.
Because of direct connections to the twelve organs, the channels are named after organs, and two run on the middle line. One in front (Ren channel) and the other one in the back (Du channel)
These two channels have their own acupuncture points .the other six extraordinary points don’t have their separate points but are formed by the inter connections of points to the twelve paired channels.
The network of channels connect the internal organs and the exterior of the man, the microcosms with the universe the macrocosm to establish an universal harmony, when body is attacked by such external factors as wind, cold, heat, humidity dryness and fire(called as exogenous factors) disease may be caused.
As these factors affect the balance of QI (VITAL ENERGY) in their pertaining organs, these diseases first occur in the internal organs and then affect channels via the connection of the internal organs with the channels.
The ancient Chinese discovered that it is possible to cause a change in the body by skillfully influencing the QI (VITAL ENERGY) at the surface level; this is the prime objective of the acupuncture therapy.
Acupuncture points are the windows on the body surface for exchange of cosmic energy so that the body can remain in energy balance, with the rest of the universe (macrocosm).
How relevant are the diagnostic approach of traditional system, to the present diagnostic tools of the modern medicine?
Yes, if integrated, the modern with the ancient diagnostic approaches lot of benefit can be derived.
The basic difference is, the most of the modern diagnostic tools are helpful in the determining the state of the disease in the system.
Where as, by an ancient approach, one can monitor energy imbalances and determine the state id health of an individual at all stages and also can take preventive measures.
As per the world Health organization the definition health is well being at physical, mental(emotional) and economical level, if they are good then only it is a perfect health.
Health conditions are divided in to Healthy state, Sub Health state and Ill Health.
Ancient diagnostic methods can be operated at all the three levels, where as modern ways determines only after the ill health condition sets into the system.
So, far there are no instruments invented for the study the subtle pattern of vital energy flows for the diagnostic purpose.
What are the materials Used?
In ancient china, nine different types of needles were used.
Types of needles common today
- Fill form
- Embedded Needles
- Plum blossom needles
- Three edged needles
- Hot needles.
Other methods used to stimulate Acupoint:
- Moxibustion (Heating with Herb)
- Cupping (creating pressure by Vacuum)
- Battery operated electrical Stimulation of acupuncture points via needle.
Are there any instruments and replacing the needles?
- Laser beam therapy(using light waves on acupoints)
- Sono punctures(using sound waves on acupoints
- Xuebao acupuncture pointer is made of permanent high energy magnet which is a are element and not ordinary magnet.
The magnet flux formed by advance technological methods is magnetic beam and not magnetic field .Xuebao’s magnetic flux can reach the acupoints through the skin without piercing its. it can inter change freely between static magnetism and dynamic magnetism it is highly versatile convenient and produces no side effects widely used and cost effective.
Contraindications to Acupuncture therapy:
There are some disorders which do not respond to, or are adversely affected by acupuncture,
In these conditions it is advisable to avoid acupuncture and recommend the patients seek other acupuncture remedies.
- Cancer and other malignant diseases:
Acupuncture has no curative effect on malignant disorders. However secondary effects such as severe pain, loss of appetite, mental depression and lack of sleep can be effectively and safely manages with acupuncture.
- Where there are clear indications for surgery.
Comparison to Acupressure:
Same acupoints to be used for acupressure and derive the desired result as compared to acupuncture, acupressure is more painful.
Safety Measures
Better to use disposable needles or patient should carry his won set of needles for him self.
